How to Measure Cabinet Doors USING EXISTING HINGES

  1. On the outside, measure the width of the door.
  2. Then measure the height on the outside of the door.
  3. On the inside of the door, find the center of the bore hole.
  4. Measure from the bottom of the door to the center of the bore hole. Confirm the
measurement from the top of the door to the center of the upper hinge bore hole. Typically, these are the same measurements.

How to MEasure for a Missing Cabinet Door

  1. First, determine the overlay. Most often you can do this by checking some of the other doors. In this example, we have a 0.5” overlay.
  2. Next, measure the opening of the inside of the cabinet. This opening is at 16.25”. To get a half inch overlay, you add 1 inch to accommodate for both the left and right side of the cabinet. In this example, I will add 1” to the 16.25” to get a new size of 17.25” wide.
  3. Repeat this step with the height of the door. Measure the inside-to-inside opening. In this example, the opening is 43” tall, so I will order a new door with the height of 44”.

How to Measure Cabinet Door Overlay

The overlay is how much the door covers the opening. To determine the overlay:

  1. Measure the opening of the cabinet from inside-to-inside.
  2. Then, close the cabinet and measure the door from outside-to-outside.
  3. The overlay is the difference between the opening and the door, divided by 2.

As an example, if the opening is 16” and the door is 17”, the difference is 1 inch. We divide that by 2 to account for the left and right side of the door. This is 0.5” overlay door.

How to Measure for a Lazy Susan Corner Cabinet Door

To measure for a corner cabinet door, start by measuring from the inside edge of one side to the corner. Then, add 1/2" to your width measurement. This 1/2" addition is the industry standard and the recommended overlay.

Next, subtract the thickness of the door from the width measurement to ensure there is enough space for the door to fold in on itself. It's important to repeat these steps for the other door in the corner to ensure consistency.
